A Demodex is a microscopic mite that lives in the hair of many mammals. Even humans have small mites living on them, and so do dogs. Demodex mites that live on dogs (known scientifically as Demodex canis) are usually harmless, but there are some problems that can arise if too many mites are living on your canine. If too many mites live in one area of your dog, then it can cause demodicosis, which is commonly referred to as “mange.”
What are the types of demodicosis?
Demodicosis comes in two main forms. The first is called localized demodicosis, which means that just one small area of the dog is affected by the Demodex. The second is generalized demodicosis, which means that the mites are causing problems in large areas of your dog’s body. If a dog has demodicosis, he will start to lose his hair in the affected area(s). If the case becomes more severe, the skin might become scaly or start to smell.
When does demodicosis occur?
Most dogs that get demodicosis are very young, because young dogs do not have immune systems that are as developed as older dogs. When demodicosis happens in your younger dog, he might be able to get rid of it on his own. As the dog’s immune system develops further, he might be better able to fight off the harmful Demodex mites. However, you should take your dog to the vet if the problem seems to be getting worse.
If demodicosis occurs in an older dog, it is more of a problem that needs to be looked at. Demodicosis will not occur if the dog’s immune system is strong enough, so demodicosis happening to an older dog means that that dog’s immune system is not working correctly. You should take your dog to the vet so he or she can look for problems that would be weakening your dog’s immune system. It could just be your dog’s age or a medication he or she was taking, but it could also be something serious like a thyroid imbalance or cancer. It is best to let your vet check it out as soon as you notice the problem.
How do you treat demodicosis?
If your dog has come down with demodicosis, there are a number of ways that you can treat it. You should always shave the areas that are affected to keep hair out of the way, and then you can use a specialized shampoo that you can get from your vet that will help to get rid of the mites. In more serious cases, you might need to put your dog on a medication that can help with the Demodex population. Your vet can help you to decide which treatment is best for your dog.
If your dog develops demodicosis, you do not have to be afraid. The problem is almost always easily treatable. With the help of your vet, you can get your dog’s Demodex levels back to normal and he or she can be happy and healthy again.
